Recall a Bank Transfer: When Can You Still Stop a Payment?
4 min read
Sent a transfer by mistake? Learn when you can recall a bank transfer, how reversals work and what is possible with SEPA payments.

A wrong payment can happen quickly: a mistyped IBAN, an incorrect amount or a payment sent to the wrong recipient. In such situations many people wonder whether they can reverse a bank transfer.
In principle, once a bank transfer has been executed it cannot always be stopped immediately. However, there are situations in which you can withdraw a transfer or cancel a transfer. The decisive factor is mainly the timing and the type of transfer.
Can a bank transfer be recalled?
Many bank customers ask themselves whether a transfer can be recalled, whether it can be withdrawn or whether it can be reversed if a payment was executed by mistake.
The answer depends on whether the transfer has already been fully processed.
Basically there are two scenarios:
- Transfer not yet executed
In this case the bank can often still stop the payment.
- Transfer already booked
Then it becomes more difficult to reverse the transfer. In this case the recipient usually has to agree.
When can a transfer still be cancelled?
Cancelling a transfer is usually only possible as long as the bank has not yet executed the payment. Recalling an online transfer is also only possible as long as the bank has not yet processed the payment completely.
This applies for example to:
- scheduled transfers
- transfers with a later execution date
- standing orders before execution
If the payment has already been processed, the only option is often to try to revoke the transfer by contacting the bank.
How long can you recall a transfer?
Many customers ask how long they can recall a transfer after sending a payment.
Options depending on the type of transfer
The time period depends on the type of transfer:
| Type of transfer | Possibility of recall |
| standard bank transfer | only before execution |
| SEPA transfer | only while it has not yet been booked |
| instant transfer | practically impossible to recall |
Therefore it is important to react quickly when you notice that a payment was incorrect.
Transfer executed incorrectly – what to do?
An incorrect transfer can have various causes, for example a wrong IBAN or an incorrect amount. In such cases many customers try to recall a wrong transfer by contacting their bank immediately.
If you have transferred money incorrectly you should take the following steps:
- contact the bank immediately
- inform the recipient
- initiate a request to recover the payment
Example: if a payment was accidentally sent to the wrong IBAN, the bank may try to contact the recipient and request a return transfer.
In many cases the bank can attempt to recover the transferred money.
If the money has already arrived, you can try to request the money back from the recipient.
Recall a SEPA transfer – how it works
For SEPA transfers there are specific rules for reversals. The rules for SEPA payments are defined within the European payment area and are regulated by banks as well as the European Central Bank.
Recalling a SEPA transfer is generally only possible as long as the payment has not yet been fully executed.
Once the money has reached the recipient, the bank can only attempt to request a SEPA transfer reversal. The recipient must agree to this.
Recall an instant transfer – is it possible?
Recalling an instant transfer is in most cases not possible. Recalling an immediate transfer is also normally impossible because these payments are completed within a few seconds.
The reason: instant transfers are processed within seconds. The money is credited to the recipient immediately.
Therefore you should be particularly careful before executing such a payment.
