Piraeus Bank S.A. is a universal bank headquartered in Athens and the core operating subsidiary of Piraeus Financial Holdings S.A., which is listed on the Athens Exchange (ticker: TPEIR). Founded in 1916, it is one of Greece’s four systemic banks and is supervised under the European Central Bank’s Single Supervisory Mechanism, with resolution oversight by the Single Resolution Board. The bank offers retail, SME, and corporate banking, including current and savings accounts, cards, consumer and mortgage lending, business and shipping finance, cash management, trade finance, leasing, factoring, asset management, and bancassurance, alongside treasury and investment services. Its distribution combines a nationwide branch and ATM network with digital channels (winbank) and open-banking APIs, and it supports SEPA and instant payments, card issuing and merchant acquiring. Following rapid domestic consolidation during the 2012–2013 crisis period, the group integrated ATEbank’s selected assets and liabilities, Geniki Bank, Millennium Bank Greece, and the Greek operations of certain Cypriot banks, and subsequently divested most international subsidiaries to refocus on the Greek market. In recent years it has executed a balance-sheet clean-up, reducing non‑performing exposures through securitisations (including Phoenix, Vega, and Sunrise transactions under the Hercules Asset Protection Scheme) and undertaking capital actions and a holding-company restructuring. Funding relies primarily on customer deposits, supplemented by wholesale instruments (covered bonds and senior preferred/non‑preferred) and access to Eurosystem facilities; risk remains largely tied to Greek macroeconomic conditions and interest‑rate dynamics, with ongoing requirements to meet MREL and other prudential buffers. Standard products carry published fees and charges, and interest terms are typically variable and benchmark‑linked; depositors are protected up to €100,000 per person per institution by the Hellenic Deposit and Investment Guarantee Fund in line with EU rules.
